Can you promote your product in r/webdev?

You cannot promote a commercial product in r/webdev, because Rule 4 says, "We do not allow any commercial promotion or solicitation." Self-promotion is also restricted by Rule 3, "no excessive self-promotion," and project or portfolio posts are limited by Rule 5 to Showoff Saturday only.

The rules that cover promotion

Rule 3: No self-promotion

"Read and follow reddiquette; no excessive self-promotion. Please refer to the Reddit 9:1 rule when considering posting self promoting materials."

Rule 4: No commercial promotions/solicitations

"We do not allow any commercial promotion or solicitation. Violations can result in a ban."

Rule 5: No soliciting feedback not on Saturday

"Sharing your project, portfolio, or any other content that you want to either show off or request feedback on is limited to Showoff Saturday."

Submit page

"Abide by reddiquette and don't self-promote."

What gets removed

  • Commercial promotion or solicitation, violations can result in a ban
  • Project, portfolio, or show-off posts made outside Showoff Saturday
  • Question posts without the correct flair, the submit page says they will be removed
  • Low-effort posts/comments, including title-only posts, easily searchable questions, vague prompts, and LLM generated content or hallucinations

Safer ways to show up

  • If you want to share your own project or portfolio, keep it to Showoff Saturday
  • Focus on technical details of a project, not a product, as stated in Rule 5 guidance
  • Answer questions and participate without excessive self-promotion
  • Use the correct flair on your post, especially if it is a question
Whatever the written rules say, the pattern that gets promo removed everywhere is the same: batches of similar comments, reused wording, and necro-posting on old threads. A promotional mention only has value if it survives, so pace matters more than volume. We measured this the expensive way: 70% of bought pool comments were removed within two weeks.
