Can you promote your product in r/Upwork?

You generally cannot promote your product in r/Upwork. Rule 4, "No Outside Promotion," says, "We do not allow the promotion of any outside tools or extensions," and Rule 2 says off-site guides and videos are not allowed, though it allows you to write a Reddit post and mention your website without direct links.

The rules that cover promotion

Rule 4: No Outside Promotion

"We do not allow the promotion of any outside tools or extensions due to spam and inability to check for any malicious purposes."

Rule 2: Off site guides are not allowed

"outside guides and videos are not allowed. If you wish to help other freelancers with your guides, you can write a reddit post and mention your website, but direct links are not allowed."

Rule 3: Hiring or finding work in this subreddit is not allowed.

"do not post For Hire or Hiring posts or comments here."

Sidebar rule

"No posts looking to hire freelancers or be hired as a freelancer - try /r/forhire."

What gets removed

  • Promotion of outside tools or extensions
  • Direct links to off-site guides or videos
  • For Hire or Hiring posts or comments
  • Posts looking to hire freelancers or be hired as a freelancer

Safer ways to show up

  • Post advice directly on Reddit instead of linking to an off-site guide
  • If relevant, mention your website in a Reddit post, but do not include a direct link
  • Discuss Upwork-related matters rather than trying to sell a product
  • Engage by answering questions and participating normally, without AMA-style promotion
Whatever the written rules say, the pattern that gets promo removed everywhere is the same: batches of similar comments, reused wording, and necro-posting on old threads. A promotional mention only has value if it survives, so pace matters more than volume. We measured this the expensive way: 70% of bought pool comments were removed within two weeks.
