Can you promote your product in r/smallbusiness?

You generally cannot promote your product in r/smallbusiness. The rules say "No business promotion posts are allowed" and the public description says "This sub is not for advertisements!" There are narrow exceptions: you can use the weekly "Promote-your-business thread only," and you can mention your business in a relevant reply when it is relevant to the conversation and not used repeatedly or abusively for promotion.

The rules that cover promotion

Rule 1: Post only questions about small business.

"NO business promotion, lead generation, rants, info-tainment, success stories or unsolicited instructional texts, treatise, or how-to's are permitted in posts."

Rule 2: No links, product recommendations, unsolicited advice, blog content, or SEO shaping.

"We are not here to help your SEO, promote your product, or provide an audience for your unsolicited advice or stories."

Rule 3: No business promotion posts

"No business promotion posts are allowed. Promote your business in the weekly Promote-your-business thread only."

Rule 3: No business promotion posts

"You can mention your business in a relevant reply to a post or comment in other threads when relevant to the conversation but deliberate abuse of this exception to promote will be recognized and removed."

What gets removed

  • Business promotion posts
  • Advertisements, lead generation, and offers of free services used as promotion
  • Blog links and blog content in posts
  • Product mentions in new posts or comments if they appear directly or indirectly promotional

Safer ways to show up

  • Ask or answer actual small business questions
  • Use the weekly Promote-your-business thread if you want to promote your business
  • Mention your business only in a relevant reply when it fits the conversation
  • Share your own experience in the weekly stickied or pinned share-your-experience thread
Whatever the written rules say, the pattern that gets promo removed everywhere is the same: batches of similar comments, reused wording, and necro-posting on old threads. A promotional mention only has value if it survives, so pace matters more than volume. We measured this the expensive way: 70% of bought pool comments were removed within two weeks.
