Can you promote your product in r/roastmystartup?

Yes, but only in the specific context of submitting your own startup to be roasted. The rules say, "You can only submit your own start-up," and "YOU MUST POST A CLICKABLE LINK IF YOUR BUSINESS IS ALREADY OUT THERE," while Rule 1 removes certain link types, Rule 3 removes low-effort or non-roast posts, and Rule 4 allows removal of AI-written posts.

The rules that cover promotion

Roastees 1

"You can only submit your own start-up. We will look through your post history to ensure you are at least somewhat affiliated to that start-up. If you violate this you will be banned and reported."

Roastees 4

"YOU MUST POST A CLICKABLE LINK IF YOUR BUSINESS IS ALREADY OUT THERE. If it's just an idea, say so."

Rule 1: No ProductHunt Links, Vercel Links, just a Link or free subdomains

"Any post with a producthunt or vercel link will be removed. If you don't believe in your startup enough to buy a domain its not worth our time to roast."

Rule 3: Lack Of Effort or not Roast

"if you just post a two sentence post it will be removed, if you post something asking a question it will be removed."

Quoted from the subreddit's own rules, snapshot from July 2026. Read all 4 rules on Reddit

What gets removed

  • Posting a startup you are not affiliated with, this can get you banned and reported
  • Posts with ProductHunt or Vercel links
  • Reposts from another subreddit, two-sentence posts, or posts that are just questions
  • Posts written by AI, at moderators' discretion

Safer ways to show up

  • Post only your own startup or startup idea
  • If your business already exists, include a clickable link, but not a ProductHunt or Vercel link
  • Follow the submit template: product, market, competition, stage, conversion strategy, and why you
  • Frame your post as a roast request, not as a generic question or a low-effort promo drop
Whatever the written rules say, the pattern that gets promo removed everywhere is the same: batches of similar comments, reused wording, and necro-posting on old threads. A promotional mention only has value if it survives, so pace matters more than volume. We measured this the expensive way: 70% of bought pool comments were removed within two weeks.
