Can you promote your product in r/podcasting?

You generally cannot promote your product in r/podcasting outside the specific channels the rules allow. Rule 2, "Promoting Products or Services," says promotional posts or feedback requests for products, services, or tools are not allowed except in the weekly Product or Service promotional thread, and the submit page also says, "No promotions for podcasts, products or services without pre-approval by the moderators."

The rules that cover promotion

Rule 2: Promoting Products or Services

"Promotional posts or feedback requests for products, services, or tools are not allowed except in the weekly Product or Service promotional thread."

Rule 9: Required Disclosure Of Affiliation

"Posts and Comments from a user which is affiliated with a product, service or event must disclose that relationship."

Sidebar Rule 7

"Promotional posts for products and services are prohitted unless pre-approved by the moderators."

Submit-page text

"No promotions for podcasts, products or services without pre-approval by the moderators."

What gets removed

  • Promotional posts or feedback requests for products, services, or tools outside the weekly Product or Service promotional thread
  • Posts or comments promoting or recommending something without disclosing your affiliation
  • Market research style posts or open ended posts that possibly lead to product development, outside the weekly Product or Service promotional thread
  • Posts from accounts with less than 5 karma or less than 7 days account age are removed by AutoMod

Safer ways to show up

  • Use the weekly Product or Service promotional thread for product, service, or tool promotion
  • Get pre-approval from the moderators before posting promotions
  • Disclose any affiliation if you post or comment about a product, service, or event
  • Participate by answering questions and joining general podcasting discussions without promotional links
Whatever the written rules say, the pattern that gets promo removed everywhere is the same: batches of similar comments, reused wording, and necro-posting on old threads. A promotional mention only has value if it survives, so pace matters more than volume. We measured this the expensive way: 70% of bought pool comments were removed within two weeks.
