Can you promote your product in r/MachineLearning?

You cannot use r/MachineLearning to directly promote a paid product. Rule 2, "No Self-Promotion," says the subreddit "does not permit the promotion of paid products" when the intent is clearly promotional, but links to paid products can be acceptable if the post provides sufficient value to the community and the intent is to share a resource or collect feedback for an open dialogue, with the decision left to moderators. Rule 1, "No Spam," and Rule 3, "No Marketing Campaigns (SEO)," make the overall approach strict.

The rules that cover promotion

Rule 2: No Self-Promotion

"r/MachineLearning does not permit the promotion of paid products, wherein the intent is clearly to promote a particular product."

Rule 2: No Self-Promotion

"posts with links to paid products are acceptable, contingent on the fact that the post offers sufficient value to the community members and the intent is to share a resource or collect feedback for an open-dialogue."

Rule 1: No Spam

"The posts deemed to be spam will be removed, and repeat offenders will be permanently banned from participating in the subreddit."

Rule 3: No Marketing Campaigns (SEO)

"r/MachineLearning strictly prohibits strategic marketing campaigns targeted at community members, and posts intended to rank for SEO purposes."

Quoted from the subreddit's own rules, snapshot from July 2026. Read all 6 rules on Reddit

What gets removed

  • Spam posts are removed, repeat offenders can be permanently banned
  • Promotion of paid products when the intent is clearly promotional
  • Strategic marketing campaigns targeted at community members, and SEO-driven posts
  • Bare arXiv links, low-effort research posts, and posts without appropriate tag

Safer ways to show up

  • If you link a paid product, make the post a resource or feedback request with sufficient value to the community
  • Use the appropriate tag such as [R], [D], [P], or [N]
  • Add technical detail, do not post low-effort content
  • For research links, include body text with commentary or analysis to start discussion
Whatever the written rules say, the pattern that gets promo removed everywhere is the same: batches of similar comments, reused wording, and necro-posting on old threads. A promotional mention only has value if it survives, so pace matters more than volume. We measured this the expensive way: 70% of bought pool comments were removed within two weeks.
