Can you promote your product in r/Business_Ideas?

You generally cannot promote your product, service, blog, website, Discord, or social media in r/Business_Ideas. Rule 1, "Soliciting / Advertising," says "You are not allowed to advertise your own product, service, blog, website, Discord instance or social media," but it also gives a narrow exception: "If you have a business or offer services, you may only post them in our Weekly Free For All Thread that gets published each Sunday."

The rules that cover promotion

Rule 1: Soliciting / Advertising

"You are not allowed to advertise your own product, service, blog, website, Discord instance or social media."

Rule 1: Soliciting / Advertising

"If you have a business or offer services, you may only post them in our Weekly Free For All Thread that gets published each Sunday."

Rule 1: No Advertising

"You are not allowed to solicit your own services without permission. Do not post blogs that you are affiliated with."

Rule 4: We Aren't Your Focus Group

"Do not post your "website redesign" or offer services "to see if your idea will get traction." We aren't your focus group"

What gets removed

  • Advertising your own product, service, blog, website, Discord, or social media outside the Sunday Weekly Free For All Thread
  • Affiliated blogs or articles, the sidebar says users posting them "will be banned for spamming"
  • Website redesign or traction-testing posts that use the community as a focus group
  • External survey links without moderator approval first

Safer ways to show up

  • Share your business or services only in the Weekly Free For All Thread on Sunday
  • If you want feedback on your website, reach out via ModMail first
  • Use the correct flair, such as [IDEA], [LFP], or [FEEDBACK], and include enough detail for useful replies
  • Participate by sharing ideas, giving feedback, and answering others' questions without advertising yourself
Whatever the written rules say, the pattern that gets promo removed everywhere is the same: batches of similar comments, reused wording, and necro-posting on old threads. A promotional mention only has value if it survives, so pace matters more than volume. We measured this the expensive way: 70% of bought pool comments were removed within two weeks.
